When you have a wedding on the horizon, all of your energy might be focused on the big day, but the truth of the matter is that there is plenty to get done before you say “I do!” One of the milestones on the wedding preparation check list is taking the engagement photos. Engagement photos are different from wedding photos in that they are typically more casual and they are usually taken during a quiet time, but still, they can help you capture memories of the beginning of your relationship. If you want to take amazing engagement photos, consider these three tips to help you get the effect that you are looking for.

Great Posing Tips

Forbes offers a handful of tips for making sure that you look great in each picture. For example, when you are sitting still, make sure that you lean forward just a little bit and that you keep your chin up. Keeping your chin up prevents you from creating a double chin, and it helps you maintain a much more attractivve look. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should always move one shoulder forward a little. This gives your body the subliminal effect of being gracefully in motion even if you are standing still. This is a good way to keep even the most posed photos looking beautifully spontaneous.

Remember to open your eyes just a little wider than you normally do. This prevents you from squinting when the flash inevitably goes off, and you will also discover that it helps you look interested in what is going on around you, even if you are not smiling. However, do not overdo this one, as it can make you look both shocked and scared!

Getting Close

CNN suggests that you get closer to your significant other than you think necessary. This makes sense as the camera will pick up on any space that is visible between you. Get comfortable, and snuggle up. Unless you are trying for an American Gothic look, don’t simply stand side by side, staring straight at the camera. Some of the best shots that your photographer is going to take are going to be interaction shots, where you are actually doing something with each other. Talk as you take the picture, make jokes, act as you normally would and touch as you normally would as well.

We talked with Lisseth Jasso Photography about this subject, and they added, “Remember that the engagement pictures are supposed to show how you interact as a couple. This is something that can make a big difference when you see them later. This is someone who is very important to you, and at the end of the day, you will find that it can be a wonderful bonding experience. Look into each other’s eyes, smile, and think about why you are there. Take risks with the photos, stay connected and be willing to have some fun with the experience!

Choose Your Place

Your engagement photos can be taken anywhere you like, but there are a few strategies to employ. First you might want to spread the photos over a few different locations. Start at home, head out to a certain place and finish off somewhere else. The more variation you have, the more exciting the effect might be. Another thing to consider is that the place should be a location that is important to you. Did you meet there? Have you always been fond of this park or that courtyard? These pictures can remind you of all of the fun that you’ve had in the past.

Be willing to take advantage of the space that you have. If you are dressed for it, climb trees, hang out on the rocks, and help each other up. These are all things that can take a photo shoot from dull to perfectly you.
