Privacy Fence: Top 3 Reasons Your Yard Needs a Fence

For people who are buying a home or just looking to improve their existing home, the sanctity of the home is of paramount importance. This inviolability gives a sense of serenity to the homeowner, allowing them an escape from the rigors and distractions of their public activities.

While many people are content to remain indoors most of the time, most folks enjoy some time outdoors. Many, in order to retain that sense of sanctity, opt for privacy fencing to keep their outdoor activities private, secure, and to enhance the overall look and feel of their residence

There are a lot of reasons to build a privacy fence around your home, but when you break it down, it really comes down to 3 things: privacy, security, and aesthetics.

Privacy: Let’s face it: In the age of social media and a world with video cameras practically everywhere you go, true privacy is in extremely short supply. Privacy fencing around a property can enhance privacy in a number of ways. Primarily, it provides clear delineation of the property, which controls accessibility. The possibility of neighbors, solicitors, and even trespassers wandering into your space, or worse yet, barging into your space, will be greatly reduced or eliminated by this simple barrier. In addition, noise from street traffic, neighbors, and passers-by can be greatly reduced depending on the material and thickness of the fence.

Security: Privacy fences can offer the homeowner enhanced security in many respects. Yard Dog Fence and Decks says, “First of all, it’s your property, and nothing so clearly delineates the boundaries of your domain like a fence. Boundary disputes between neighbors are less likely with a physical object defining that boundary. And, in addition to protecting the home and its occupants from the elements (wind, rain, and snow), a solid fence can provide shade for those garden plants that can’t stand full sun and safely keep kids and pets safe in the yard.” In many parts of the country, privacy fences provide protection from local wildlife and stray animals, too. In Colorado, for example, an increasing number of homeowners in the Denver area have installed these types of fences for protection from coyote attacks. Also, many police departments, including Tulane University Campus Police, advise having high fencing around a residence in order to keep potential burglars from carrying large items over the fence.

Privacy fences can also prevent accidents in some cases. As many businesses have used privacy fencing to create “safe zones” for their workers in order to reduce corporate liability in the case of an accident, privacy fences around private residences can also prevent unforeseen mishaps. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published on it’s website the following statistic, “Since 2005, unintentional drowning has replaced motor vehicle traffic incidents as the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for boys aged 1–4 years.” A privacy fence around a residence with a pool could certainly prevent this kind of tragedy.

Aesthetics: Aside from privacy and security issues, you still want your home to feel like a home, not a fortress. That’s why the industry has endeavored to make materials for this kind of fence so attractive. A nice fence can really make your property look much prettier, and can help you keep it that way. Trash, leaves, and other debris that would normally blow into your yard for you to clean up is kept outside and spillover from your neighbor’s landscaping project is less likely to ooze over into your space. And who knows, it might even keep your kid from accidentally mowing down Mrs. Peabody’s rose bushes next door when you finally get around to teaching him how to use the lawnmower!
