Family Vacations: Why Not Ecuador?

0

Located on the equator, Ecuador is an often overlooked gem despite its sparkling coastlines, mysterious rainforests, and ancient culture. Whether you’re looking for a cool coastal getaway or a humid adventure in the depths of the jungle, you can get it all in this beautiful destination. Take your family to a country where various cultures meld seamlessly and expose them to some of the oldest civilizations in the world.

Take a Galápagos Islands Tour

The Galápagos Islands are home to one of the most diverse and complex ecosystems on the entire planet. These volcanic islands were formed millions of years ago and are known for their rich evidence in evolutionary theory. The beauty of this archipelago has not gone unnoticed by visitors, and thousands of people flock here annually to get a glimpse of the pristine turquoise waters and the interesting variety of wildlife that can be spotted throughout the chain. La Loberia on San Cristobal Island is a popular destination with tourists due to the high population of friendly sea lions that lounge on the beach and frolic in the jewel toned waters. You’ll also likely catch glimpses of wild iguanas and lava lizards as you’re laying on the island’s speckled beaches.

Straddle the Equator

Consider this infinitely more cool than posing on the Four Corners in the United States. If you’re wanting to say you’ve been in both hemispheres at one time, then you’ll want to pack up the family and make the trek to Mitad del Mundo. It’s located just outside the town of Quito and is the exact spot where the equatorial line was calculated in the 1700s and proved that the world is indeed round. Because of its touristy appeal, the area is now complete with a museum, a planetarium, and a monument. Never mind that technology tried to ruin the fun by saying the actual equator line lies just north of Mitad del Mundo; enjoy the touristy feel of this neat little stop.

The Devil’s Nose

If you find yourself traveling inland, ensure a stop in Riobamba where you’ll climb aboard a train and find yourself climbing up a 330 foot cliff face. Sit on the right hand side of the train for the best views as you traverse up a series of dizzying switchbacks. The journey takes a little less than an hour and chugs you past small villages and Andean lakes. The fare includes a drink and a snack, although you may be too engrossed in your views to even taste what they give you.

Visit Quito High in the Andes Mountains

You might find yourself a little bit short on time with all of your traveling, and you’d be remiss to skip an immersion in the Latin American culture or experience the sights and sounds of the high Andes mountains. Kill two birds with one stone and visit the pulsing town of Quito for colonial architecture, brilliant food, and welcoming locals. Quito’s 9000+ feet above sea level makes this the world’s second highest capital city. Be prepared to feel like the air is a little bit thin, and don’t be alarmed if you find yourself out of breath as you explore Old Town and take in the colonial architecture of Iglesia de San Francisco. Stop in to locally owned restaurants for rich Ecuadorian soups and stews like the cheese and potato locro soup. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try roasted guinea pig, a popular dish in this region of Ecuador. Don’t forget the creamy and decadent flan to round out your culinary excursions.

We talked with Happy Gringo Travel who explained, “When people think of a Latin American vacation, they tend to stick with places closer to home or with more well advertised countries like Brazil. But if you want a region that’s diverse in landscape and rich in culture, then Ecuador can give your entire family a vacation they’ll never forget.” From the friendly local residents to the small villages teetering on top of the Andes Mountains, you’re sure to find everything you could ever want in a globe trotting adventure that everyone will enjoy.
