Getting Married on a Budget

You finally got asked the question every girl is waiting for…“Will you marry me?” Those four simple words have now catapulted you into a new phase in your life. You’ve got the ring, now it’s time to make the plans. As you put the pen down to the check, it soon hits you. You only have $38.00 in your savings account. Don’t panic! There are plenty of ways to have the wedding of your dreams while on a budget.

Idea # 1

Don’t overspend on the dress. The dress is no exception on a way to cut costs. Wedding dresses can run into the thousands. Of course, you want to look amazing, but you also want to give guests food and drink. One way you can save on the dress is by shopping at mass retailers or consignment shops instead of a private wedding boutique. Retail stores will definitely not have the high prices boutiques will, and you can customize the dress by adding embellishments or adding sleeves.

Idea # 2

According to CBSNews.com, 50% of the overall budget is spent on the venue and DJ/Band costs. The best way to save is to invite fewer people. Typically, venues have you pay per head. Therefore, the less people you have, the less people you have to pay for. You can also choose a more non-traditional venue such as a park or beach. Play your iPod instead of hiring a DJ or band. This can save you thousands of dollars as well.

Idea # 3

Cut flower costs. The costs of flowers can add up, especially when it comes to the bouquets. According to Money.CNN.com, there are ways to substitute bouquets. Have your bridal party hold fans, pinwheels or clutches. You can also pick your own flowers instead of using a florist.

Idea # 4

Fake your wedding cake. Cakes can run you hundreds of dollars. Have your baker make a cardboard cake with a small cake at the top that you cut into. Who says you even need a cake? Substitute cookies or cupcakes. As long as there is dessert, guests will be happy either way.

Idea # 5

Save on alcohol. According to Confête Events, “Instead of having an open bar, order a few kegs and get some cheap wine to put on the tables.” There is no need to have hard liquor which can cost you a ton. Beer, and a choice of white or red wine will be plenty for the night.

Idea # 6

Get second hand items. You can get 90% of your décor from someone else who has already been married. Go to garage sales and pick up cheap mason jars or milk bottles to use as center pieces. You can paint them yourself or fill them with cheap candies.

Idea # 7

Let people help! Get friends and family to each cook one dish. Have your mom bake the cake. Get your friends to create wedding décor or fill center pieces. Having people to help will really cut costs in all aspects of the wedding. People want to feel a part of the special day, so let them!
