There are a lot of conflicting style images out in the world. From parents melting down the moment their teenage girl puts on a little bit of eyeliner to the teenager throwing a fit over not being able to express herself, girls need some freedom. NTY Clothing Exchange suggests, “There are plenty of style guides out there for teenage girls, but what they say can make a girl’s head spin. However, they all agree that there are three pieces every teenage girl should have in her closet.”
The first of these items is what has been deemed the LBD – or Little Black Dress. This is a classic style that dates way back. The length of the perfect LBD has been long debated, but it seems to be a dress that comes to just above the knees. The fun about this kind of dress is that by simply adding or taking away a specific accessory (IE a simple necklace for work and a statement necklace for a date) can take the dress from casual to fancy in zero to sixty. A belt can add a pop of color to the dress, and it can be paired with a lot of different kinds of boots.
The second of the items that every teenage girl should own is a “Mary Poppins” bag – IE a bag that will fit everything. There is no specific color that has been suggested, so a teenage girl could go through three or four of these before she finds one she likes. It can be a neutral color – like brown, beige, nude, or white – or it could be a funky color – like pink, purple, or blue. There are many places to look for a good bag like this – Amazon, Target, Wal-Mart – and it all depends on the girl’s style and her preferences. This kind of bag can also be created from left over fabrics from other projects if the teen is crafty. With a lot of different kinds out there, the bag can have exterior pockets, interior pockets, or even a funky pattern on the outside. Some have bows and others simply have a lot of flash.
The final item that teenage girls should have at least one of in their closets is a good pair of black heels – pumps specifically. They don’t have to be terribly high – even a half inch heel works well. In fact, it is recommended that the black pump be under three inches high to make sure that the heels are versatile. The point of having a good pair of black pumps is to dress up any outfit. A slight point at the toe makes the shoes not too trendy so that the girl isn’t the talk of the school. However, pairing the heels with a pair of jeans and a tee shirt dresses up the look. Black heels also match every kind of dress out there – from the LBD to the outrageously colored dress that is worn every once in a while.
These three pieces make a good outfit on their own. However, the pieces can also be used in a variety of outfits. The pumps dress up any outfit. The bag fits everything – from make up to cash to a change of shoes if the bag is big enough and everything in between. Even the LBD can be dressed up or down depending on the situation. Making sure that these three items are in a teenage girl’s closet can be difficult, but having more than one of each is always better than not having one at all.
