Five Essentials to bring on your Whitewater Adventure Trip

0

If you have decided to take the plunge and embark on a whitewater rafting trip, there are a few essentials to keep in mind while packing. Depending on the company or group you are going with, they tend to provide some minimal basics but the rest is up to you. Let’s cover the five most important things to bring on your adventure trip.

1. Water Bottle

When I say water bottle, I don’t mean the standard 16 oz. that you can purchase from nearly any store across the country. While you may think that this will fit better in your bag or that you won’t drink like a fish, it is better to be safe than sorry. Pack at least a 32 oz. bottle. You’re going to be active with paddling, helping load and unload boats, and hiking. According to Oars.com, one of the most common first aid treatments given on whitewater rafting trips is dehydration control.

2. Broken-In Shoes

When people are preparing for their trip, they often run to the store and purchase a brand new pair of shoes to tackle the outdoor elements. This is a big mistake, especially if you wait until the day of the rafting adventure to try them on. There’s nothing worse than incurring blisters on the hike then having to wear those shoes while wet, further rubbing against your tender skin. New & Gauley River Adventures said, “Bring a pair of shoes that you know are comfortable or make sure to break in the new ones prior to the trip.”

3. A Snack

Bringing with a tasty treat that is easily transported is another essential. When I say easily transported, I’m not aiming for a Pringles container. This is referencing something more simplistic such as an energy bar, Rice Krispy treat, or other snack of the same sort. Now is this time to indulge while you are burning a wealth of calories. Your guide will be more than happy to store your snacks in a safe place to access during the ride.

4. Comfortable Clothes

By now, you’ve probably read about how quickly wool and synthetics dry as well as the warmth they provide. Unfortunately, these materials also tend to be quite uncomfortable to wear. About.com lists cotton as a better option for hot summer days. In addition to these quick-dry options, bring some comfortable socks, long underwear, summer shirts, hats, and hoodies. Make sure that you are not only practical, but comfortable as well.

5. Recording Device

This will be different for each individual. While many may opt for cameras or recorders, others may find that a more simplistic approach of bring a journal is the best way to record their adventure. Get creative and make sure you capture all the moments you want to remember in the future. You will thank yourself later.
