In a lot of ways, the home is where the heart is. So many people enjoy coming home after a long, hard day at work. Once it’s time to come home, it’s important for your place to be a relaxing environment. If the thought of coming home feels stressful and causes anxiety to rise in your heart, you might want to consider looking around and changing the aesthetics. There are countless ways to transform your home and turn it into the beautiful oasis that’s perfect for tranquility and peace. Instead of trying to tackle a million ways, focus on three key and unique tricks you can implement.

1. Scent

Even if a place looks absolutely stunning, the whole experience is ruined if it smells terrible. It’s very important to make sure you stay on top of the sanitation practices in your home because they will directly impact the way your home smells. Place a few scented candles in various rooms throughout your home. Light one every day for an hour or two to get a great scent through the air. If you’re cooking foods with strong scents, open the windows and use fans to push the scents out of the house. You don’t want the smells like curry and garlic seeping into the walls. Use oil diffusers in areas like the bathroom and bedroom. Essential oils are both powerful and helpful for a healthy mind and body. Use certain scents for specific rooms and it’ll help you associate those smells with happiness and relaxation.

2. Sight

Above all else, a cluttered room is an indication that the mind and life are cluttered as well. Do your best to keep your living areas clean. If need be, hire a cleaning service to come through once or twice a month.

Natural light is always calming to wake up to. Take advantage of all the natural light your home has. Open up the blinds and use sheer curtains to allow sunlight in. For your outside area, consider adding an awning so you can still enjoy the sunlight while sitting in the shade.  Incorporate different textures to play on each other and add visual depth. For example, if you have a leather couch, add soft, knit pillows and a cotton throw blanket to add to the decor.

Incorporate large pieces of artwork in various areas of the room. Greenery always makes a room look and feel more alive. Statement plants are really popular in home decor. If you don’t have the desire or time to develop a green thumb, purchase a few succulents and place them in various spaces in the house. Additionally, a fresh bouquet of flowers will always so wonders for any space. Along with your groceries, pick up a bouquet or two and make your home look its best.

3. Sound

There’s something about music that relaxes the soul. Visit any local spa. Upon entering through the front door, there’s soft music playing. The music usually includes lots of wind chimes, harps and other stringed instruments. These sounds help the atmosphere feel more peaceful and conducive to a person’s ability to unwind. Upon entering the home, it’s nice to capture the same vibe. It’s also very possible. There are a few ways to incorporate peaceful sounds at home.

Consider purchasing a few small radios for different rooms in your home. It’s easy to find a small working radio that’s inexpensive on Amazon or at your local thrift store. Set it specific stations that play orchestral music or jazz. Make sure the tunes are low enough to only enjoy in that specific room. If you have an open floor plan, utilize one sound for that one area. You could consider purchasing a really cool sound machine that plays different types of white noise. Many people buy sound machines for their bedrooms and fall asleep to the sounds of crickets, waves, or a quiet rainstorm. For some people the sound of a fan is enough to relax them. A high-tech option involves the use of a sound system. Install speakers that go throughout the home and play one consistent sound. If you have a Spotify or Pandora subscription, it’s really easy to sync up your tunes on one playlist and allow it to play continuously through the home.

There are other elements such as touch that you can include. However, when you start with these three tactics as your foundation, you’ll be able to create a home that’s a joy to retreat to.
