7 Things to look for in a Fitness Center

Cost is one of the most important factors consumers consider when deciding which fitness center to join. Is there a down payment or just a monthly charge? In addition, does becoming a member require signing a contract and for how long? While the sales pitch may sound wonderful, individuals would be wise to read all the fine print and realize if it isn’t in writing, it probably isn’t true. When comparing the cost among gyms, also compare the amenities. While the lowest price may be the most attractive, if the fitness center doesn’t offer the amenities you’re looking for, it may not be worth it.

We talked with Max Fitness Academy who explained, “During your first walk-through, pay special attention to how clean the center is. Even if you’re given a guided tour, don’t be afraid to slow down and inspect every aspect of the facility, including locker rooms and bathrooms. If there is a pool or a spa, check these out as well. In addition, be aware of Out of Order signs on equipment. If there are more than a couple of these, it may be a sign that the fitness center doesn’t maintain its equipment very well.”

While you’re touring the gym, make sure the kind of equipment you want to work out on is there and that the supply is plenty. Try to visit at the same time you plan on going to the gym. If this is a busy period, you want to find out ahead of time if you’re going to have to wait for your favorite weights or exercise apparatus to be free. In addition, look closely at the equipment to try to gauge how old it is. While every gym isn’t going to have the latest state-of-the-art equipment, you don’t want to get stuck with outdated machines either.

Who goes to the gym you’re considering joining? Women only? Men and women? Some gyms cater to a certain clientele as a strict rule, and other gyms attract a certain clientele. If you don’t have a preference, then this might not be an issue, but if you do, look closely to see who you’re going to be working out alongside.

Where the fitness center is located may help determine your success with your workout regimen. If you’ve found the ideal gym, but it is located across town, you may not visit it very often. While you’re comparing cost, amenities and other factors, take location into consideration. If it isn’t convenient to your residence or place of work, it may be too much work to go to the gym very often.

Hours of operation are as important as the location of the facility, as convenience may be key to your success. If the only time you can manage a workout is at 5:00 am, you may or may not go to the gym very often. While that is an ideal time for some people, it won’t work for everyone. The only thing that really matters is that the gym is open when you want to go. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure the hours are convenient for your schedule.

Some people don’t care about extras, as they just want to work out on the equipment. Others, however, join a particular gym because they offer a certain amenity. Whether you are looking for a facility that offers daycare, Zumba classes or facial massages, look for a fitness center that offers the extras that are important to you.
